For a cool 400,000 pounds (near about Rs. 3.5 crores) sterling you could have bought one of the world’s most outrageously luxurious cars – the Rolls-Royce Phantom Metropolitan – unveiled today at the Mondial de L’Automobile in Paris.

Well, you could have bought one of the 20 Phantom Metropolitans but they are so popular with the very rich that they have all already been sold.

So who bought them? Torsten Muller-Otvos, chief executive of Rolls-Royce, said that rich collectors from nearly every country in the world have bought the Metropolitan – which has its own picnic table made from 500 bits of hand-crafted wood – from Asia to the US to the UK. The Car features picnic accessories as well as imaginary city skylines as decor options with a “full palette” choice of 44,000 colors.

“One of the reasons why this new car and all Rolls – Royce do so well is that they are international cars sought by international customers.”

He added that Rolls-Royce is set for another record year and expect 4,000 cars to have been sold by the year end. At the half year, sales rose by more than 30 per cent.

To meet the growing demand, Rolls-Royce has just employed another 100 at its Goodwood factory, bringing the total workforce to more than1400. A new logistics and technology centre is due to open in Bognor Regis creating more jobs. When BMW took over the Rolls-Royce, it employed 300 people and made 300 cars a year.

Mr Muller Otvos added: “It’s been a great success story which has been helped by taking dealerships global. We are working on a new convertible model for 2016.”
