Constant mesh, sliding mesh and synchromesh are the types of gear boxes. As the name suggests, constant mesh gearbox has the gears on lay shaft and main shaft in a continuous, i.e. constant mesh. In sliding mesh gear box there is sliding of gears for meshing of teeth. Synchromesh is a further improvement which is equipped with a facility (friction cones) to reduce the noise level and enable smoother meshing. During engagement, the cone clutch engages and brings the selector and gear to the same speed, hence the name.
