KTM has been a player in the electric vehicle (EV) sector since 2011, starting with the launch of the Freeride E electric enduro bike. Despite more than a decade of EV experience, KTM has so far refrained from producing street-legal electric bikes. However, this is set to change as KTM, along with Husqvarna, plans to introduce street-legal electric motorcycles in global markets by 2025.
According to leaked documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), KTM and Husqvarna are expected to launch the KTM ‘Electric Freeride (Street Legal)’ and Husqvarna ‘Electric Pioneer (Street Legal)’ models in 2025. Both models are listed with a ‘5.54kWh Li-ion’ battery pack, suggesting a 5.54kWh battery capacity.
This development aligns with the 2022 concepts of the Husqvarna E-Pilen, KTM E-Duke, and Freeride E LV, all of which featured a 5.5kWh battery pack. Details about the electric motor’s output remain limited, but if the new models are based on the Freeride E LV concept, they are expected to offer similar specifications.
Given that the Freeride E LV had a removable battery pack, it is anticipated that the upcoming KTM and Husqvarna electric motorcycles will also feature swappable batteries. KTM’s role as a founding member of the European Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium, which aims to standardize swappable bike batteries, further supports this expectation.
