Hyundai is gearing up to introduce the production version of its Seven electric SUV concept, initially unveiled at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show. While it was previously anticipated that the vehicle would be named the Ioniq 7, recent developments suggest that this new three-row SUV will likely be launched as the Ioniq 9. Hyundai confirmed in July that the debut of this highly anticipated model is scheduled for later this year.

The design of the production Ioniq 9 has undergone some significant changes compared to the bold Seven concept. While the concept’s more radical features have been toned down, the vehicle retains key elements such as the sleek, swept roofline and the nearly vertical tailgate. The production model features conventional round wheel arches, which replace the concept’s square design, though the square-shaped cladding around the wheel arches remains. Additionally, traditional rear doors have been substituted for the concept’s distinctive rear-opening coach-style doors.

While the Seven concept boasted an impressive 3.2-meter wheelbase, the production version appears to have a slightly shorter wheelbase, though it still promises to offer ample interior space. The Ioniq 9 will share many similarities with the Kia EV9, a boxy SUV that was launched last year, indicating that the two models may have a lot in common in terms of design and technology. Furthermore, Hyundai’s luxury sub-brand, Genesis, is working on an electric SUV called the GV90, which may share its platform with both the Ioniq 9 and the EV9. The recently unveiled Genesis Neolun concept might also offer a glimpse into the design language of the upcoming GV90.

As of now, Hyundai has not released specific powertrain details for the Ioniq 9. However, it is expected that the specifications will closely align with those of the Kia EV9. The EV9 offers a 76.1kWh battery paired with rear-wheel drive as the standard configuration. Additionally, there is a 99.8kWh battery option available with either rear- or all-wheel drive. The highest range version, equipped with the 99.8kWh battery and rear-wheel drive, is estimated to achieve up to 490 kilometers on a single charge.

Looking ahead, Hyundai is planning to roll out nearly a dozen new electric vehicles (EVs) by the end of the decade. Many of these upcoming models will be built on a next-generation EV platform featuring standardized batteries and motors, reflecting Hyundai’s commitment to advancing electric mobility.

With the Ioniq 9, Hyundai is poised to strengthen its presence in the electric SUV market, offering consumers a blend of innovative design, advanced technology, and practical performance. The upcoming launch is set to mark a significant milestone in Hyundai’s journey towards a sustainable and electrified future.
