Maruti Suzuki Returns to the Hatchback Scene
Maruti Suzuki boasts the most extensive CNG lineup among budget automakers, yet it has been absent from the hatchback market since the introduction of the fourth-generation Swift. Now, it’s making a comeback, ready to compete against its main rival, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. Let’s explore the key highlights.
Specifications
The Maruti Swift CNG features the same 1.2-litre engine as the standard model, but in its CNG form, it generates 68 bhp and 101 Nm of torque. In regular petrol configuration, this engine produces 80 bhp and 111.7 Nm. Both variants come with a standard five-speed manual transmission, while the petrol version also offers a five-speed AMT.
In comparison, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that delivers 68 bhp and 95 Nm of torque in its CNG variant. In its standard petrol form, the output is higher, at 82 bhp and 114 Nm. Like the Swift, it also comes with a five-speed manual as standard, along with an optional five-speed AMT.
Hyundai’s Advantage?
Hyundai has adopted a dual-cylinder setup, similar to Tata, to maximize usable space in the trunk. While the official boot space figure hasn’t been disclosed, the regular trunk (with seats up) measures 260 litres, which is standard for this segment. The new design is expected to reclaim at least half of that space.
On the other hand, Maruti retains the older design for the Swift CNG. Although it hasn’t released specific boot capacity details for the CNG model, it’s anticipated to be notably less than the claimed 265 litres. Boot space has always been a significant concern for CNG vehicles, and Maruti sources indicate that they are exploring design modifications for the trunk, though nothing has materialized as of now.
Pricing and Variants
To better compete with Hyundai, Maruti has introduced higher-end CNG variants, including the well-equipped ZXi variant. This variant aligns with Hyundai’s Sportz trim, offering comparable features inside and out. Interestingly, neither brand has yet released a fully loaded ZXi+/Asta variant for their respective models, likely due to cost considerations and to maintain a pricing gap between the Dzire and Aura.
The Maruti Swift CNG is priced between Rs. 8.20 lakh and Rs. 9.20 lakh, while the Grand i10’s CNG variants start at Rs. 7.68 lakh and go up to Rs. 8.30 lakh. Hyundai’s ability to offer lower pricing stems from its dual-cylinder technology, as well as its standard single-cylinder design.
