The Kia Sonet has returned to the CarWale garage, this time in its diesel iMT variant. When the Sonet first arrived in 2020, we tested the diesel manual version. Now, we’ve decided to explore how the clutch-less manual diesel iMT fares, offering the benefits of a manual transmission without the hassle of a clutch pedal—a convenient feature in an increasingly automatic Indian car market.
Our goal with the Sonet this time is to evaluate whether Kia has made significant improvements in the compact SUV segment. The Sonet was already well-equipped when we first reviewed it, but now we’re keen to see if Kia has addressed the issues we previously highlighted. Additionally, we aim to assess the convenience of the iMT gearbox. Is it truly the best of both worlds, combining manual control with the ease of an automatic, or is it simply a cleverly marketed feature designed to attract modern buyers seeking control and fuel efficiency without the burden of constant clutch operation?
We’ll test the Sonet extensively, both in city traffic and on the highway, to evaluate its performance, features, and durability under our demanding usage conditions. We’ll also monitor how the dual-tone interior holds up as we rack up the miles. The model we’re testing is the HTX+ diesel iMT, which, as Kia describes it, is a clutch-less manual variant. It’s powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 114bhp and 250Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed iMT.
Key features of our test vehicle include six airbags, 16-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, dual digital screens, a 7-speaker Bose sound system, and a stylish black and brown upholstery.
